EUSEW 2023 policy session - Energy self-consumption as success factor of the ecological transition

Despite the fact that we are experiencing an enormous energy crisis, there are a number of new approaches to production and consumption which could be factors in a solution. Self-consumption, either individual or collective, is one of them. Individual installations, especially photovoltaic installations, have existed for more than 20 years and allow millions of European citizens to consume, at the very least, what they produce.

However, this commercial segment has not yet been fully developed in all Member States, particularly in professional use. Consumers in all their diversity, representing the whole of society (including businesses, individuals, and local and regional authorities) and producers, as well as intermediaries, are the new players in self-consumption, which contributes to price reductions, stabilising and securing supplies, transitioning from fossil fuels to renewables, and bringing places of production closer to places of consumption.
