Local/regional project
The project is the first in the UK to pioneer the Dutch ‘Energiesprong’ (energy leap) initiative, which has radically upgraded the energy efficiency of thousands of homes in the Netherlands. With a budget between 100,000 and 1M€, new wall panels are prefabricated off-site and arrived in ‘full story heights’ complete with ample insulation and a durable board finish ready to crane into place. The radical retrofit is completed in less than one week with occupants able to remain in residence throughout the works. Tenants are consulted in the design process and were allowed to choose colours on finishes etc.
The tenants also provide a "wish list" which informs the project brief. Prefabricated wall panels are made off-site and are then put in place using a crane. The installation process lasts approximately a week and can be completed with residents in situ.
The scheme was primarily handled by the council city managing agent Nottingham city homes. The project duration is relatively short, even including off-site activities and disruption to residents is minimal, disruption can be an off-putting factor for householders. Householders are also part of the design process which gives them a degree of ownership over the scheme. The method also promotes a zero energy approach and thus combines carbon-saving activities with efforts to mitigate energy poverty.
The project is ongoing.
Main beneficiaries: the energy-poor.
It addresses the topics of: health, climate change, communities, insulation, quality of dwelling, energy efficiency and energy prices.
