MédiaTerre programe

Policies and Measures

The Médiaterre programme is a national programme that aims to fight against energy poverty and to act for the preservation of the environment by helping volunteer families with modest incomes to adopt more economical practices daily, better for their health and the environment. It enables young people performing their civil duties (national service) to help low-income families in low-income French areas to: learn and adopt ecological habits and help them reduce their energy bills and environmental footprint.

The aim of the programme is to help these families to adopt the so-called ‘eco-citizens habits’ and additionally to reduce their energy costs. The MédiaTerre programme has two main objectives:

  • THE FIGHT AGAINST ENERGY INSECURITY: the number of families unable to pay their energy bills is increasing more and more. However, these people do not or hardly feel concerned by environmental awareness campaigns and therefore do not know how to reduce their energy consumption.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION: our current way of life is not sustainable for the planet: natural resources are increasingly scarce and pollution is constantly increasing causing disastrous effects on the environment (climate change, disappearance of 'plant and animal species, pollution of the water we drink, the land that feeds us and the air we breathe).

It is a good practice of training young volunteers in social awareness and helping vulnerable people at the same time. Les médiaterre was created by Unís-Cité, a network of 260 professionals and 500 volunteers working on 55 branches in all regions of mainland France, alongside 150 communities, 1,000 associations and 150 partner companies and foundations.
