Through expert technical assistance provided by the Cyprus Institute, Strovolos aims to enhance the quality of life for its vulnerable populations, align with the Covenant of Mayors, and set an example for other local governments in Cyprus by implementing targeted measures that address energy efficiency, public health and community engagement in the context of Sustainable Development Goals.
The overall objective was to identify local indicators for diagnosing and monitoring energy poverty in Strovolos using qualitative and quantitative methods, enhance understanding of energy poverty issues, and raise public awareness about its impacts on health and available support measures, while also introducing residents to the concept of Energy Communities to improve household energy security in anticipation of a national regulatory framework.
The activities included mapping sociodemographic information and identifying data gaps in Strovolos. Energy poverty indicators were created and refined, while criteria for identifying energy-vulnerable households were defined. A report was produced to strategise energy poverty mapping, and municipal actions towards relevant Sustainable Development Goals were documented. An online survey was developed to assess energy vulnerability, and a public awareness campaign engaged stakeholders through an event that presented key findings.
